Chile
During the 1990s, Chile's economy experienced periods of growth and contraction, both of which were linked to export performance. As economic growth in Chile is tied to export performance and foreign direct investment, financial crises in the late 1990s hit Chile especially hard, and a recession ensued. At present, unemployment rates are high, despite economic recovery. While counterintuitive, this trend is the result of economic expansion in low labor intensive sectors, principally copper mining for export. In addition to high unemployment rates, in recent years the average hourly and minimum wage has decreased and the number of part-time workers have increased; benefits, when available, are generally not adequate. Thus, the current Chilean economy is plagued by two realities; first, the high rate of unemployment and underemployment, and second, the dependence of the nation economy export performance. Both of these problems must be addressed if a sustainable and realistic economic recovery is to be realized.
