Israel
For the past 15 years, the Israeli economy has been characterized by extreme fluctuations. The growth periods have been associated with waves of immigration and peace agreements. The negative growth periods have associated with Palestinian uprisings and waves of suicide bombings. The boom years did not benefit all Israelis. The top quintile (20%) was the only income bracket whose share of income grew over the past decade; the share of the other four quintiles shrank. All socio-economic data reflects the major national and ethnic divides in Israel: between Jewish and Arab citizens, and among Jews, between those of European or American origin and those whose origins are in Muslim and Arab countries.
