Lesotho
Lesotho's labor force is being decimated by AIDS. 35% of the total population is HIV positive. Among pregnant women between the ages of 25-29, the infection rate is 39.1%. A sample taken in two Maseru garment factories revealed 33% and 38% infection rates. Unemployment is over 50% with unemployment among women at 56.6% and men at 46.9%. No new jobs are being created and 14,000 textile industry jobs have been lost since the expiration of the U.S. Multi-Fiber Agreement (MFA) on January 1, 2005.
