Mali
Mali is a landlocked, extremely poor country.
Good macro-economic achievements of Mali tend to hide the thorny issue
of unemployment. The fight against unemployment is an essential component
of the overall fight against poverty. Formal unemployment is mainly an
urban phenomenon, where it is at least seven times higher than in rural
areas; extreme poverty is most prevalent in rural areas where people do
not generally seek jobs and thus are not counted as unemployed. Women
and young people are most affected by unemployment and young school leavers/graduates
are also more and more affected by the phenomenon. However, it is also
very important to note that the unemployment period is long, more than
four years, on average. Growth is required for absorbing unemployment.
It remains quite obvious that unemployment plays a great role in the state
of poverty in Mali, and a good policy that would reduce unemployment would
certainly be, in itself, a strategic tool of poverty alleviation.
