Labour's platform for the Americas

For the past year, the Global Policy Network (GPN) has been working closely with the Hemispheric Labour Organization (ORIT) to create Labour’s Platform for the Americas. The Platform was presented to presidents of the Americas when they met in Mar del Plata, Argentina in November 2005. It has been produced in four languages and will also be used by unions throughout the Americas as the basis for their political action over the next few years.

GPN researched and created the first draft of the platform and participated in numerous meetings where unions contributed their ideas. In the end, the Platform is the product of scores of unions. Victor Baez, the Executive Secretary of ORIT, says that because of the Platform and the participatory process in which it was made, "historic unity" among the unions of the Americas has been achieved. Already, the Joint Parliamentary Commission of the MercoSur countries, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay has adopted the platform and urged governments to follow its policy recommendations.
